  • Biography*: According to Hoar, Robert and Margaret were married in the parish church at Gainsford on February 10, 1768. Robert's bride belonged to a prosperous family; in the words of one who has studied the Wade Papers " a farming family with coniderable capital, and ... strict Methodists."
    Apparantly he married a woman Elizabeth for a second marriage. The following is a copy of the will of Robert Colpitts:
    In the name of God, Amen, I, Robert Colpitts, of Hillborough in the County of Westmoreland, (now Albert County), being of sound mind, memory, and understanding, but mindful of mortality, do make and ordain this, my last will and testament in manner following. I comment myself to Almighty God, the giver of all mercies and my estate wherewith it has pleased him to bless me. I give and bequeath as follows,after my just debts are paid and Funeral expenses and a Christian burial at the direction of my executors. I give to my wife, Elizabeth,the whole of my real estate to hold to her during her natural life, in lien of all Dower and also my household furniture. Likewise, I give to my sons, Robert, Thomas, William, and Ralph and to my daughters Elizabeth, Margaret, and Jane and to my grandchildren John and Margaret, the children of my son John, deceased, the whole of my personal estate to be divided into nine equal shares and divided among them share and share alike, but I nevertheless order and direct that the livestock be not taken from the Farm at present but be continued on the same for the purpose of increase and improvement until the end of two years after my decease, when the three first names sons shall be entitled to their shares the year following. Likewise I give and devise to my youngest son, George, the remainder of my Real Estate to hold to him from and after the decease of my wife, and his heirs forever and also remainder of the stock on the Farm after the respective shares are distributed. Lastly, I do nominate,constitute, and appoint my two sons, Robert and Thomas, to be executors of this my last will and Testament, hearby revoking all other and former wills and pronouncinng this to be my hand and seal the eighth day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and nine.
    Signed, sealed,published, pronounced, and decleared by the Testator as his last will and Testament in the presence of us who subscribed our names as witnesses thereto in the presence of the Testator and of each other.

    The following was the beginning of the probate of the will:-

    Westmorland County (now Albert County). Be it remembered that on the 18th of September in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and ten before Amos Botsford, Esquire, Surrogate Judge of Probate in and for said county, Robert Colpitts, one of the executors named in the last will and Testament of Robert Colpitts, late of Hillborough, Gentleman, deceased, appeared and accepted said trust, and John Fawcet, one of the subscribing witnesses to the said will, appearing and being duly sworn on the Holy Evangelists of Almightly God, did depose and testify that he saw the Testator therin named, the said Robert Colpitts, sign, seal, publish, pronounce, and decleare the said writing to be has last will and Testament, and that he, the deponents with Amos Botsford, Esq. and Timothy Richardson subscribed their names as witnesses thereto in the presence of the testator and of each other; and that the testator at the time of executing the same was of sound mind, memory, and understanding, which will is thereupon approved and ordered to be recorded in page 78. They lived at Dover, then moved to Kings Co. to Dutch Valley and then to Dickie Mountain. Robert was ordained by the Free Baptist Elders in 1833. The RELIGIOUS INTELLIGENCER for November 16, 1855 has an account of Robert Colpitts and of Rachel's parents.
